The Crab Nebula, Messier 1, fills this Hubble view with an intricate web of cool blue-green light and incandescent red-orange filaments. Its brightest region lies near the centre, where luminous folds and fine, branching strands overlap against softer veils of blue. Around them, the nebula’s irregular outline reaches into a broad field of black, punctuated by small, sharply defined stars.

This complex structure is a supernova remnant within the Milky Way, located in the constellation Taurus approximately 6,500 light years from Earth. That identity gives the image an unusual tension: what first appears almost delicate is the visible form of an immense astronomical remnant. Hubble’s view preserves both impressions, setting lace-like detail within a dark expanse.

Warm and cool colour divide the composition without separating it. Orange and crimson threads cross the central blue glow, sometimes gathering into dense knots and sometimes thinning until they are barely discernible. The surrounding darkness is not simply a backdrop; it defines the nebula’s uneven perimeter and allows its faintest outward-reaching wisps to remain visible.

A closer look

Near the centre, the structure becomes particularly elaborate. Fine red and orange lines appear to loop through pale blue material, producing a network of overlapping curves rather than a single smooth cloud. Small flashes of warmer colour emerge in the lower central area, while brighter strands seem to fold around darker pockets within the nebula.

The upper-right quadrant carries one of the image’s strongest gestures: a branching orange formation curves outwards before fading into quieter blue and then black. Across the lower left, connected filaments form a looser weave, their changing thickness creating a fragile, thread-like texture. Along the right-hand side, a gently arcing ridge of brighter material gradually dissolves into the surrounding haze.

At the outer margins, the nebula becomes more elusive. Thin strands extend beyond the main luminous mass, and muted blue-green wisps soften into space. Faint yellow-beige traces can be picked out near parts of the perimeter, while scattered stellar points establish a second, much finer scale across the image. Seen at large size, these transitions—from intense central colour to nearly imperceptible edges—become as compelling as the brightest filaments themselves.

Choosing the right size and finish

Fine art can feel intimate at smaller sizes and more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to judge the scale of the piece in your space.

For exact dimensions, specialist framing or a larger project, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 16x16in (40x40cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original for colour that remains faithful to the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer antique character. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, reduced reflections and safer delivery. They arrive professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available; contact our workshop if the exact option you need is not listed.
