ESO 381-12, also catalogued as PGC 42871, occupies the centre of this Hubble Space Telescope view: a lenticular galaxy seen across 270 million light years in the constellation Centaurus. Its bright interior is surrounded by a broad, delicate halo whose light fades by degrees into the black field, giving the galaxy a presence that is at once substantial and remarkably quiet.

The smooth central glow is set against a field scattered with fine white and blue points. Fainter objects emerge more slowly from the darkness, while a distinct smaller galaxy appears towards the upper right. Together they create a striking impression of depth, but the composition remains anchored by ESO 381-12 and the soft, almost radial structure visible around its luminous centre.

A closer look

At large scale, the halo reveals subtle variations that are easily lost at first glance. Its brightest region is compact and pale, yet the surrounding light is not perfectly uniform: faint gradations extend outwards before dissolving into the background. The transition is especially effective where the diffuse outer glow meets the crisp pinpoints scattered around it.

The wider field has its own restrained intricacy. Dimmer points gather towards the upper left, faint traces of more distant-looking objects appear near the lower-left edge, and isolated streaks and specks punctuate the darkest areas. The prominent form in the upper right provides a visual counterweight to the central galaxy without disturbing the spaciousness of the scene.

Hubble’s view makes contrast the defining element: concentrated light surrounded by immense darkness, a smooth galactic form amid innumerable sharp details. From across the room, ESO 381-12 reads as a single luminous presence; seen closely, the surrounding field resolves into a far more layered arrangement of stars, galaxies and elusive glimmers.

The model in the listing images is holding the 16x16in (40x40cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original for colour that remains faithful to the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer antique character. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, reduced reflections and safer delivery. They arrive professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available; contact our workshop if the exact option you need is not listed.
