Messier 106 — also catalogued as M 106 and NGC 4258 — sweeps diagonally across this Hubble Space Telescope view, its luminous centre surrounded by broad, intricately textured spiral structure. Creamy yellow light gathers around the core and softens into orange, while cooler blue regions and vivid crimson filaments trace portions of the arms against the near-black background.

This is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici, some 20 million light years from Earth. The immense distance sits in striking contrast to the image’s wealth of fine detail: the galaxy does not appear as a remote blur, but as a layered system of bright knots, dark passages and loosely curling bands of light.

The composition has a strong sense of direction. From the comparatively subdued lower-left region, the eye follows the galaxy inwards towards its concentrated core, then out again along the prominent upper-right arm. Here, crimson threads mingle with compact blue patches, giving the arm a richly variegated, almost granular appearance.

A closer look

At the centre, the brightest material forms a dense creamy glow wrapped in a softer orange halo. Delicate wisps interrupt its apparent smoothness, and narrow darker structures become visible around the inner spiral edge. The transition from this bright centre into the surrounding arms is gradual: light breaks into folds, streaks and isolated points rather than ending at a hard boundary.

The upper-right arm is especially expressive at large scale. Its red filaments bend through darker material while small blue and white highlights punctuate the surrounding structure. Farther out, the galaxy becomes increasingly diffuse, with faint traces seeming to dissolve into the background. Along the lower edge, sparse blue points provide a quiet counterweight to the brilliance of the core.

Beyond the main body of Messier 106, tiny lights remain suspended in the dark field. They are easily overlooked at first, yet they deepen the visual reach of the image and emphasise how much of the frame lies beyond the galaxy’s brightest regions.

Choosing the right size and finish

Fine art can feel intimate at smaller sizes and more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to judge the scale of the piece in your space.

For exact dimensions, specialist framing or a larger project, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original for colour that remains faithful to the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer antique character. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, reduced reflections and safer delivery. They arrive professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available; contact our workshop if the exact option you need is not listed.
