RS Puppis burns at the centre of this Hubble Space Telescope view, surrounded by a reflection nebula whose illuminated folds form a delicate light echo. Some 6,500 light years from Earth in the constellation Puppis, the pulsating variable star is held within a broad field of blue-white luminosity, dark openings and scattered stellar points.

The central brilliance gives the composition its structure. Light appears to spread outwards through layered, filament-like material, tracing curved ridges and faint tendrils before fading into deep navy and black. Rather than forming a neat halo, the nebula unfolds asymmetrically: bright passages gather close to the star, while quieter wisps extend towards the edges of the frame.

Its scientific identity makes the view especially compelling. RS Puppis is classified as a pulsating variable star, and the surrounding nebula as both a reflection nebula and a light echo. The result is an image in which light is not merely the means of observation; it is also part of the astronomical phenomenon being observed.

A closer look

Near the centre, fine textures seem to radiate from the stellar glare, crossing one another in pale blue and white. Immediately below, softer dark filaments interrupt the illuminated material, sharpening the impression of depth. The brightest regions appear almost sculpted by light, yet their edges dissolve into translucent strands rather than ending abruptly.

Towards the upper right, a slender blue-white arc emerges against the darker field. Along the left side, the colour passes subtly from deep navy into softer blue, while the lower-left corner opens into a comparatively dark expanse. In the lower right, extremely faint wisps persist at the threshold of visibility. These restrained outer details balance the intensity of the centre and become particularly apparent at large scale.

Small stars are scattered throughout the frame, especially noticeably in the darker upper-left region. Some lie against open blackness; others appear through the nebular glow. Their precise points provide a quiet counterpoint to the diffuse, curling forms around RS Puppis.

Choosing the right size and finish

Fine art can feel intimate at smaller sizes and more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to judge the scale of the piece in your space.

For exact dimensions, specialist framing or a larger project, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 16x16in (40x40cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original for colour that remains faithful to the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer antique character. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, reduced reflections and safer delivery. They arrive professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available; contact our workshop if the exact option you need is not listed.
